MARYCARE HEALTH CENTER, EJEMEKWURU NIGERIA
LIFE SAVING / LIFE CHANGING

In January 2011, several doctors and nurses volunteered their time and expertise, traveled to Nigeria, and participated in the first medical mission to Ejemekwuru, in Imo State Nigeria. This team of medical practitioners provided access to medical care to over 600 patients for the first time in their lives. After evaluating the overwhelming suffering and loss of lives due to lack of basic nutrition and medical care, MaryCare determined that Ejemekwuru was a prime candidate for a medical facility, and our health center was officially commissioned January 12, 2016. Roday, we have a standing facility in operation with four rooms, one ward, and an open reception area for outpatient care.

At present, we have one medical doctor (Thursdays 9-4), two nurses, one nurse’s aide, one domestic staff, and a director of operations (Monday—Friday). We are committed to recruiting locally when possible. While the facility is not yet fully equipped, we have managed to scavenge what retired stock, equipment, and supplies we could find from hospitals around the U.S. and ship them to the MaryCare clinic abroad.

It is the desire of founder Anne Bates to make our services to the patients free of charge so that they are encouraged to get the medical attention they need. Patients need only pay five hundred naira ($1.30) to register and obtain their medical card, which allows them to consult with one of our doctors and collect their medications at no additional cost. Patients who are unable to pay the five hundred naira are not turned away. Everybody is treated no matter their ability to pay.
