The MaryCare 2024 Annual Medical Mission has drawn to a close, and the results speak for themselves. Over three remarkable days, our team of dedicated healthcare professionals brought life-changing medical care to 1,092 patients in Ejemekwuru, a rural community in Nigeria where access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge. What unfolded was more than a medical mission — it was a powerful reminder of what compassion, coordination, and commitment can achieve.
A Community in Need
For many residents of Ejemekwuru and the surrounding areas, routine medical care is a luxury out of reach. The nearest equipped medical facilities are often far away, and the cost of healthcare places even basic treatment beyond the means of most families. Women, children, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable — many living with untreated conditions that compound over time. It is precisely this gap that the MaryCare Annual Medical Mission exists to bridge.
Three Days of Transformative Care
From the moment the mission opened its doors each morning, patients arrived in steady streams — some having travelled considerable distances to be seen. In total, 1,092 patients received consultations, examinations, and essential medications, all completely free of charge. Among them were mothers seeking care for young children, elderly patients managing chronic conditions, and individuals finally able to address ailments they had endured for years in silence.
One of the standout achievements of this year's mission was the performance of the dental section. With dental care among the least accessible services in rural Nigeria, demand was high and the team rose to meet it — treating an average of 70 patients per day across the three days. From extractions to consultations and oral health education, the dental team provided care that many patients had never previously been able to access.
Across all departments, patients were seen by a broad range of specialists, including ENT experts, ophthalmologists, optometrists, cardiologists, general practitioners, dentists, dental therapists, and a laboratory scientist. Each patient received a thorough examination and left with appropriate medications and guidance — and, just as importantly, the knowledge that they are not forgotten.

The Team Behind the Mission
None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary effort of the people who showed up and gave everything they had. Twenty doctors, 15 nurses, and 13 volunteers worked tirelessly across three demanding days, often seeing patients back-to-back from morning until evening. Their professionalism, patience, and genuine care for each individual they treated set the tone for the entire mission.
We also extend our deepest appreciation to the MaryCare board for their visionary leadership and guidance, and to the friends of MaryCare who generously donated their time, talent, and financial resources. Your contributions are the engine that makes this mission run. And to the dedicated staff at the MaryCare clinic in Ejemekwuru, whose year-round work quietly sustains this community — your efforts are the foundation on which everything else is built.
Care That Continues Year-Round
The mission may have lasted three days, but MaryCare's commitment to Ejemekwuru is ongoing. The MaryCare Health Centre operates throughout the year, with doctors visiting every Thursday to provide continued care for community members. Patients can access this service by purchasing a clinic card for just 500 naira, giving them access to a range of treatments at minimal cost. It is this sustained presence — not just the annual mission — that has contributed to a meaningful reduction in the region's mortality rate and a measurable improvement in quality of life over time.
A Call to Action
The 2024 Annual Medical Mission is a success story that belongs to every person who played a part — from the specialists who flew in to the volunteers who registered patients at the door. But the need does not end when the mission does. Thousands more in this region and beyond are still waiting for the kind of care that MaryCare provides.
If this mission has moved you, consider becoming part of it. Whether through a financial donation, a commitment to volunteer your skills, or simply spreading the word about the work MaryCare is doing, every contribution helps extend this reach. Together, we can ensure that more communities like Ejemekwuru have access to the healthcare they deserve — not just once a year, but all year long.
Here's to continued partnership, continued healing, and continued hope.
